Its rushing, bubbling waters noisily rush for 165 meters in three successive jumps, framed by lush vegetation in the green wilderness of the Nera River Park, just outside the city of Terni. The waterfall was artificially created in 271 BC by the Romans to regulate the abundant waters of Velino River which, thanks to a specially dug channel, were drained into the Nera River passing the majestic slopes; the waterfall is now the major turist attraction. You can admire the panoramic views from the specially constructed balconies in both the high and low jump, Upper and Lower Belvedere, or walk one of the marked trails that allow visitors to see the falls up close. The tunnel that lead to the “lovers balcony“, just below the the first jump, is especially enchanting. This living source of not only water but inspiration too captivated poets and painters and was inserted among the stages of the Grand Tour route taken by scholars and rulers across Europe to visit Italy. A night visit, inspired by a spectacular light show is an experience not to be missed.
The opening / closing is programmed according to a schedule that varies during the course of the year. The entrance fee (€ 8.00, € 5.00 reduced groups, students). And ‘advised to wear suitable footwear excursions, waterproof and / or hats to protect themselves from the water. And ‘forbidden: access to minors (under 14) unaccompanied away from the paths delimited; collect plant essences.
